New Sermon Series - What a Body!

Sunday, August 29th Sermon: "Intelligent Design"
Scripture: Ephesians 2:19-22

Paul & Patsy Flannery

I read a disturbing article buried deep in the back pages of the paper last week. I know, I know, I must be one of only five people left on the planet who still reads the paper! The article expressed a difference of opinion among leading economists gathered for a financial summit. At least 50% of these financial wizards predicted that America had passed the point of no return in debt re-payment. No big deal, right?

Not right! Most people I interact with these days seem unsettled by a tidal wave of cumulative bad news. The Wednesday edition of the Denver Post’s business section (7/28/10) confirms this with the sub-headline, “Consumer confidence falls again even as stocks post gains.” Behind our concerns over unemployment, healthcare, illegal immigration, environmental disasters, & political dissonance, bubbles a boiling fear that this fragile debt dependent economy may completely collapse.

People are scared and seem clueless where to turn for security. Yet just 80 years ago, during the Great Depression, our parents and grandparents sought refuge in the only place it can really be found on earth – in church. Huge numbers of people flocked to church because they longed for the security which comes from hanging around with God and with His people.

At Hope Fellowship we may not be flashy but we are authentic. I guarantee our people are the real deal. We believe in the living God who’s still on his throne and not wringing his hands because things are so out of control. We believe that He still offers people the best gift anyone could hope for in uncertain times – the gift of security!

Once we gain a feeling of security, we can finally do what God calls us, as his Church, to do – to serve & influence others for his Kingdom. At the beginning of this year we agreed to serve others through at least 10 different projects for 2010. We also committed to our slogan; It’s not about us… It’s about serving others… then God gets the glory! So check us out this Sunday and confirm the authenticity, security, and hope which you will find at Hope!

Spewing Slicks & Throwing Sticks!

For weeks now any sane person on the planet has watched with baited breath for “the experts” to stop the environmental chaos spewing out in the Gulf. Many don’t realize how sacred a desire this really is. Even before the great fall which infected all humans, our first “Great Commission” was to take care for God’s creation, to manage it, and even to use it to produce all of the good God designed for it to do.

At our church we have been praying for a solution knowing that God is as concerned with His Creation, and the human body as much as he is concerned with the soul. It’s not an either/or choice – it’s all of the above.

For years earth worshippers have claimed that Christians abuse the environment more than most. They’ve perpetuated the myth that just because we believe we are separate from, and superior to the creation, that we oppress it. Certainly we don’t try to defend all abuses perpetuated throughout history under the banner of Christendom. But none of us would ever try to claim perfection when it comes to our own track record either. Yet Scripture clearly teaches us that Christians should be the greatest environmentalists.

We pray for a successful solution to cap this underwater catastrophe. But let’s not waste this teaching moment. No matter how cautious we might be, no matter how many failsafe systems we put into place, we are imperfect. Life really is out of control. Just when all seems to be going right, an uncontrollable accident occurs, something will blow up, a doctor’s report will frighten us, a child will take a bad turn, or a spouse will shock us with surprising news. How delusional to think life is really under our control.

At Hope Fellowship Church our desire is to help everyone discover the only One who offers security & hope in an insecure world. We may not offer all of the razzmatazz of larger entertaining churches but we excel at 3 things. 1. We have great worship services with fun and life applicational Bible teaching. 2. At all levels we exude a warm & friendly family feeling. (We feel it is a crime for people to walk in and out of any church without even one person saying hello!) 3. We keep serving beyond the walls so that we don’t get stuck in the pews of “churchland”.
So pay us a visit. I double dog dare you. If you do, we promise, you will hear about a God who is securely in control of this uncontrollable thing called life.

Warmly,
Pastor Paul
